How To Iron On Patches

How Do You Iron On Patches?

Ok, so your brand new patch has arrived and you're ready to revolutionise that tired denim jacket.

But how exactly do you attach the little minx?

'How To Iron On Patches' is asked a lot, but it's actually pretty simple, though there are a few easy steps to follow.

Let's dig in.

Instructions:

Step 1

First up, some pre planning. Think about the garment you're attaching it to. Denim and cotton work beautifully but more delicate fabrics will need a light hand. Lace is generally a no no. You don't want to ruin any of your lovely frillies.

Step 2

Iron the intended target to make sure it's crease free.

Step 3

Set the iron to a higher setting but make sure it is NOT on a steam setting as this may mess with the glue's mojo.

Step 4

Choose your spot and place the patch glue side down. Pop a thin cloth or layer of fabric over the patch and iron firmly for 30 seconds.

Step 5

Reverse the garment inside out and repeat the ironing wizardry (keep using the cloth too).

Step 6

Huzzah! You're done. Check the patch is firmly attached and if not, just repeat the steps through again.

That's it. Denim jacket beautified.

Frequently asked questions:

Will iron on patches come off in the wash?

Iron on patches will usually stay put for around 20-30 washes and then you might start to see some peeling. The easy solution is just to add a few stitches for never ending patchy goodness.

Do iron on patches stick to leather?

Unfortunately, no. Leather and vinyl aren't great choices. Cotton based fabrics are always your best bet. Synthetics like polyester and nylon can suffer from the high heat so tread very carefully with those.

Can iron on patches be washed?

Yes. Hand washing in cold water is the number one method.

But who's doing that? Honestly?

Just keep that beautiful machine that does the work for us down to a gentle cycle in cold water. This will still likely loosen the glue over time and then we're back to the stitching, I'm afraid.
